Parker didn’t answer immediately.
Then he said something that made me grip the phone harder.
“Mom has been sending me videos showing how he’s been acting.”
I turned away from the window.
“What videos?”
“She says Dustin has been slamming doors, causing trouble, and refusing to respect her rules.”
I remembered what Dustin had whispered on the staircase.
“Have you watched those videos yourself?”
“Of course I have.”
“And did you ask Dustin what happened before accepting your mother’s version?”
Parker hesitated.
“Why would Mom lie about something like that?”
I felt a familiar frustration rising because Parker had always struggled to question Alana’s decisions.
Whenever she interfered in our marriage, he insisted that she only wanted what was best for the family.
Whenever Ellie criticized my work schedule, he said I should ignore her because she didn’t mean any harm.
Now their behavior had reached my child.
“Send me every recording,” I demanded.
“Clarissa, don’t turn this into a courtroom.”
“Send them, Parker.”
He reluctantly agreed, then warned that I shouldn’t make any decisions until he arrived.
I ended the call without promising anything.
Downstairs, I could hear Ellie speaking angrily while Alana repeatedly insisted that Parker would handle me.
I sat beside Dustin and asked him to explain what had happened in the garden.
He told me Mason had been kicking a ball near Alana’s flowers.
When the ball rolled into the flower bed, Mason rushed forward and crushed several stems while retrieving it.
Dustin had been standing near the steps, watching everything.
“Then Aunt Ellie said it was my fault,” he whispered.
I asked whether Alana had seen what happened.
He nodded.
“Grandma was right there.”
My heart sank.
“What happened after that?”
“She made me stand beside the broken flowers while Aunt Ellie took a video.”
I looked at him carefully.
“Were they asking you questions?”
He nodded again.
“They kept saying I ruined Grandma’s flowers, and I cried because I didn’t.”
I felt a sickening realization beginning to form.
If Ellie recorded only Dustin crying beside the damaged flower bed, Parker might believe he had been caught misbehaving.
The footage wouldn’t show Mason destroying the plants.
It would show a frightened child standing beside the evidence.
My phone vibrated with several incoming video files.
I opened the first recording.
Dustin stood beside the flower bed, wiping his eyes while Alana demanded that he apologize.
The camera was pointed directly at him.
Mason wasn’t visible anywhere.
In another clip, Dustin slammed a bedroom door while Ellie shouted that he needed to control his temper.
The recording began just as the door closed.
There was no explanation of what had happened beforehand.
I watched a third video showing Dustin crying beside the dining table while Alana told him he couldn’t eat until he behaved.
Then I noticed something unusual.
The kitchen clock visible behind him showed that the recording had been made three days earlier.
