I wanted to remind her that I was already giving Megan an expensive vacation, including flights, accommodation, and activities she could never have afforded on her own.
Instead, I calmly repeated that I needed the seat because I was exhausted.
My mother sighed heavily.
“You’re making this much more complicated than it needs to be.”
Those words stung more than I expected because they made my need for rest sound like an unreasonable inconvenience.
Megan shook her head dramatically.
“I can’t believe you’re being so selfish over one stupid seat.”
Before I could respond, my father rose from his chair.
He had been listening silently, but I recognized the anger in his expression before he said a word.
“What’s going on here?”
My mother immediately explained that I had received a first-class upgrade and was refusing to let Megan use it.
She didn’t mention that I had purchased everyone’s flights.
She didn’t mention that I was exhausted or that the upgrade had come from my own travel rewards.
She made the situation sound as though I had deliberately taken something from my sister.
My father looked at me with growing irritation.
“You’re the older sister, so you should know how to put family first.”
I tightened my grip on my phone and told him that I had already put the family first by arranging and paying for our entire vacation.
His jaw stiffened.
“Don’t start throwing money in our faces.”
I felt heat rising in my chest because I wasn’t trying to make anyone feel indebted.
I simply wanted them to understand how hurtful it was to be called selfish after everything I had already provided.
Megan stood beside our mother, watching the argument with an expression of impatient confidence.
She had seen this happen before, and she knew that my parents usually succeeded in making me surrender.
My father extended his hand.
“Give your sister the ticket.”
I took a small breath and shook my head.
“No, Dad, I’m keeping my seat.”
Several nearby passengers turned toward us as his voice became louder.
He stepped closer, forcing me to tilt my head upward to maintain eye contact.
“Are you really going to embarrass this family over something so insignificant?”
I could feel my heart pounding, but something inside me refused to repeat the familiar pattern.
I thought about all the money I had spent, the sleepless nights I had endured, and the countless times I had put everyone else’s comfort ahead of my own.
I thought about how ridiculous it was that one complimentary upgrade had somehow erased every generous thing I had done.
And for once, I didn’t apologize.
“I paid for this vacation because I love you, but that doesn’t mean I have to give away everything that belongs to me.”
My father’s face darkened.
“You will give your sister that ticket, or I’ll teach you some respect right here in front of everybody.”
“No.”
