Personne n’a répondu.
Je me suis tournée vers lui.
Patricia échangea un regard avec George.
“We thought it would be easier to keep the investment within our family’s existing property arrangements.”
I looked between them.
“That wasn’t my question.”
George shifted in his chair.
“The unit could initially remain under Patricia’s name while certain financial matters were organized.”
My throat tightened.
“So you want me to sell the home I own outright, give most of the proceeds to Daniel, and move into a condominium belonging to Ashley’s mother?”
Ashley rolled her eyes.
“You’re making it sound terrible.”
“Because it is terrible.”
Daniel reached for my hand.
“Mom, we’d never let anything happen to you.”
I stared at him.
“You are asking me to surrender my greatest financial security in exchange for a promise.”
He looked wounded.
“I thought you trusted me.”
“I did.”
The words hung between us.
I stood and carefully placed the disputed document inside my handbag.
Ashley sprang from her chair.
“You can’t take that!”
“It has my name on it.”
“That’s part of our financing packet!”
“Then your lender needs to know the person named in that packet never agreed to these arrangements.”
George’s expression hardened.
“There’s no need to create legal complications.”
I looked directly at him.
“Then nobody should have created documents involving my property without my consent.”
Daniel followed me toward the door.
“Mom, please don’t leave like this.”
I stopped beside the coat rack.
“When did you first agree to this?”
His eyes dropped.
“About three weeks ago.”
Three weeks earlier, he had spent an entire Saturday helping me prune the rosebushes Robert planted.
He had eaten lunch at my kitchen table and told me how much the children loved visiting.
Not once had he mentioned promising away the value of the house surrounding us.
I drove home with my hands gripping the steering wheel so tightly that my fingers ached.
Claire answered my call before I reached the end of the driveway.
When I explained what happened, she did not hesitate.
“You need an attorney, Margaret.”
By Monday morning, I had arranged a consultation with Rebecca Shaw, a local attorney who handled estate planning and property matters.
Rebecca listened without interrupting, then examined the document I had brought.
“This paper alone does not authorize anyone to transfer your property,” she said.
I released a breath I had barely realized I was holding.
“But the apparent signature and representations about your consent are serious concerns, especially if they were provided to a lender.”
She advised me to preserve every document, communicate directly with the real estate company, and avoid signing anything without independent review.
I asked what would happen if Ashley continued claiming I was willing to sell.
“We’ll make your position unmistakably clear.”
J’ai eu un nœud à l’estomac.
“Qu’est-ce que c’est?”
