Vanessa’s face burned.

Eleanor’s voice remained calm.

“And tonight you attacked me because you thought I was a woman without enough power to fight back.”

“That’s not true.”

Eleanor’s eyes hardened.

“Would you have hit me if you had known my name was on the deed?”

Vanessa said nothing.

Again, silence answered for her.

Adrian looked away.

It seemed to hurt him more than anything she could have admitted.

Vanessa turned to him desperately.

“Adrian, please.”

He did not look at her.

“I love you.”

He finally faced her.

“You call this love?”

Her shoulders shook.

“We can fix this.”

Eleanor looked at her brother.

Adrian seemed exhausted.

Not angry anymore.

Simply finished.

Vanessa reached for him.

He stepped back.

That small movement shattered her.

“Don’t,” she whispered.

Adrian removed his wedding ring.

The guests stared.

Vanessa’s eyes widened.

“No.”

He placed it on the table beside the broken plate.

“No, Adrian.”

“I spent years explaining away things I should have confronted.”

She shook her head violently.

“You’re upset.”

“I watched you assault my sister.”

“I said I’m sorry!”

“You haven’t apologized to her once.”

Vanessa turned toward Eleanor.

Her pride fought with panic.

For several seconds, nothing happened.

Then she whispered, “I’m sorry.”

Eleanor studied her.

“Are you sorry you hurt me?”

Vanessa’s eyes moved toward Adrian.

Eleanor noticed.

“Or are you sorry because you finally learned who I am?”

Vanessa began crying harder.

Adrian looked at two security officers standing near the entrance.

“Please escort Vanessa upstairs.”

Her head snapped toward him.

“What?”

“You’re packing a bag.”

“This is my house!”

Adrian’s expression became almost unbearably sad.

“No, Vanessa.”

She looked around the room.

The mansion.

The chandelier.

The guests.

The servants.

Everything she had used for years as proof that she mattered.

Then she looked at Eleanor.

The red stains had dried slightly across the dark velvet.

Eleanor’s face was bruised, but her posture remained straight.

And Vanessa finally understood the truth.

She had not only attacked Adrian’s sister.

She had attacked the woman who had silently allowed her to live the life she had been pretending to own.

Vanessa’s legs buckled.

She grabbed the back of a chair.

“Please.”

Adrian said nothing.

“I have nowhere to go.”

Eleanor’s expression softened for a fraction of a second.

But not enough.

“You had a home here,” she said quietly.

Vanessa stared at her.

“And you mistook kindness for weakness.”

Two security officers approached.

Vanessa pulled away.

“Don’t touch me!”

The guests watched as her humiliation became complete.

A woman who had entered the evening believing herself to be the queen of Hawthorne Estate was now being led away from the table in tears.

But before she reached the doorway, Eleanor called after her.

“Vanessa.”

She stopped.

Everyone turned.

Eleanor held the cracked white plate in her hands.

Vanessa looked at it.

Fear flickered across her face.

Eleanor placed it carefully on the table.

“I’m not going to hit you back.”

Vanessa swallowed.

“I don’t need to.”

She looked toward David Ross.

“Call the police.”

Vanessa’s face collapsed.

“Eleanor—”

“Assault doesn’t disappear because you discover the victim has money.”

Vanessa began shaking.

Adrian closed his eyes.
