“She offered.”

“She paid your graduate-school debt.”

“That was her choice.”

“She paid for this wedding.”

Sabrina crossed her arms.

“Because she wanted control.”

Michael shook his head.

“No.”

His voice became quieter.

“She kept paying because I kept asking.”

That admission silenced me.

Michael turned toward me.

For the first time all day, shame appeared in his face.

“I kept letting you rescue me.”

My throat tightened.

“This is not about that.”

“It is partly about that.”

He looked toward our guests.

“I made Sabrina believe there were no consequences because there were never consequences for me either.”

Sabrina grabbed his arm.

“Do not turn this against me.”

Michael pulled free.

“You shaved my mother while she was sleeping.”

Tears appeared in Sabrina’s eyes.

They looked real.

That almost made everything worse.

“I only meant to cut it.”

Michael stared.

“What?”

“I wanted her embarrassed.”

A horrified murmur moved through the tables.

Sabrina spoke faster.

“She kept showing everyone those old photographs with her ridiculous hair.”

My hand touched my bare scalp instinctively.

Sabrina continued.

“I thought if she looked foolish today, she would stay home.”

Michael whispered, “Why?”

“Because today was supposed to be mine.”

A woman at Sabrina’s table began crying.

Her maid of honor, Chloe.

Sabrina noticed.

“Don’t you start.”

Chloe stood.

Everyone looked at her.

“I told you not to do it.”

Sabrina went completely still.

Michael turned.

“What?”

Chloe’s hands were trembling.

“Last night.”

Sabrina whispered, “Shut up.”

Chloe looked terrified.

Still, she continued.

“She said she wanted to teach Elaine a lesson.”

Michael stared.

“You knew?”

“I thought she was joking.”

Chloe wiped her face.

“She asked whether sleeping pills mixed into tea would keep someone asleep.”

The room erupted.

My stomach dropped.

Sleeping pills.

Suddenly I remembered the tea Sabrina had brought me the night before.

Chamomile.

Honey.

Her apology gift.

I had drunk half of it.

That explained why I had slept through pain.

Michael’s face transformed.

“You drugged her?”

Sabrina shouted.

“No.”

Chloe flinched.

“You showed me the tablets.”

“They were mine.”

“You crushed them.”

Sabrina lunged forward.

“Stop talking.”

Security immediately moved between them.

Chloe backed away.

“I didn’t know she actually used them.”

I gripped the podium.

My knees felt weak.

Avery reached me first.

“Elaine.”

“I’m fine.”

He looked unconvinced.

Michael was staring at Sabrina with naked horror.

“You drugged my mother.”

“I did not.”

“Then why were you crushing pills?”

Sabrina looked around desperately.

“They were supplements.”

Chloe shook her head.

“No.”

Sabrina screamed.

“You are jealous because Michael chose me.”

Chloe stared at her.

Then something unexpected crossed her face.

Not fear.

Anger.

“You told me Michael was stupid.”

The room fell silent again.

Sabrina’s eyes widened.

Chloe continued.

“You said after the wedding you would control every account because he never reads paperwork.”

Michael went pale.

Sabrina laughed too loudly.

“She’s lying.”

Chloe reached into her purse.

“I saved your messages.”

Sabrina stopped laughing.

Chloe held up her phone.

“You threatened me last week.”

Denise stood suddenly.

“This circus is over.”

She grabbed Sabrina’s wrist.

“We are leaving.”

Michael stepped between them and the door.

“No.”

Denise stared at him.

“Move.”

Michael shook his head.

“I want to hear everything.”

Sabrina whispered, “Michael, please.”

He looked at her wedding ring.

Then he looked at me.

Something in his face broke.

“Were you ever going to tell me?”

She began crying harder.

“I love you.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

“I married you.”

“That wasn’t my question either.”

Sabrina reached for him again.

He stepped away.

I watched my son understand his marriage before the wedding cake had even been cut.

It should have felt satisfying.

It did not.

It felt devastating.

Michael had failed me repeatedly.

But he was still my child.

And watching someone destroy him gave me no pleasure.

Chloe handed her phone to Avery.

“There are voice messages too.”

Sabrina screamed.

“You had no right.”

Chloe answered quietly.

“You threatened my job if I refused to help.”

Richard lowered his face into his hands.

Denise remained rigid.

I looked at her.

“You knew.”

She raised her chin.

“I knew Sabrina disliked you.”

“That is not what I asked.”

Denise said nothing.

Richard looked up.

“Denise.”

His wife stared at him.

“What?”

He seemed suddenly exhausted.

“Tell them.”

Sabrina shouted.

“Dad, don’t.”

Richard ignored her again.

“The debt isn’t four million.”

Denise closed her eyes.

Michael frowned.

“How much?”

Richard looked directly at me.

“Almost nine.”

Avery cursed under his breath.

Sabrina stared at her father.

“You promised.”

Richard laughed bitterly.

“I promised because I thought your plan involved asking for help.”

Michael’s voice became almost inaudible.

“What plan?”

Nobody answered.

Michael repeated himself.

“What plan?”

Richard looked at Sabrina.

Then at Denise.

Finally, he looked at me.

“They were going to use your trust documents to make Michael financially responsible for part of the debt.”

I felt the blood drain from my face.

Michael stared at Sabrina.

“How?”

Richard swallowed.

“Through the business Sabrina wanted you to sign into after the honeymoon.”

Michael’s mouth opened.

The room tilted around me.

Three weeks earlier, Michael had mentioned Sabrina wanted them to start an investment company.

He said it would give him direction.

I had encouraged him.

Now the reason became clear.

Avery stepped forward.

“What entity?”

Richard gave him a name.

Avery immediately began typing.

Sabrina grabbed Denise.

“We’re leaving.”

Security blocked the doors.

A manager approached.

“Ma’am, Boston police have been contacted regarding the alleged assault.”

Sabrina looked at me with pure hatred.

“You called the police?”

I shook my head.

“I didn’t.”

Chloe raised her hand.

“I did.”

Sabrina stared at her.

Chloe’s voice trembled.

“She drugged you.”

Sirens became audible outside.

Three hundred guests turned toward the ballroom entrance.

Sabrina suddenly stopped crying.

Her face changed completely.

She looked at Michael with eerie calm.

“If I go down, you’re coming with me.”

Michael froze.

“What?”

She smiled.
