He thought he had escaped.
Then the officer added, “You are not to contact the child or approach his school.”
Linda crossed her arms.
“You can’t order me around.”
“I just did.”
Daniel walked me to his SUV.
“You’re not driving alone.”
“My car is here.”
“We’ll come back for it.”
I looked toward Ryan.
He watched us with an expression I had never seen before.
Not anger.
Calculation.
He was already planning his next move.
Margaret met us at her office twenty minutes later.
Claire and Noah came too.
The flash drive contained more than she had promised.
There were photographs of bank transfers from a company called Cumberland Strategic Consulting.
The firm had received $780,000 from one of my father’s former clients.
Two days later, Ryan received $190,000.
Linda received $130,000.
Patricia received $25,000.
The remaining money had been moved through several accounts.
“Where did the rest go?” I asked.
Claire pointed to another folder.
“To someone called M. Sterling.”
My maiden name was Sterling.
Daniel leaned closer.
“Our mother’s name is Mary Sterling.”
I stared at him.
“That’s impossible.”
Our mother had died when I was sixteen.
Margaret opened the transfer record.
The account had been created using my mother’s name, birth date, and Social Security number.
Someone had stolen the identity of a dead woman.
Daniel sat down heavily.
“Ryan had access to the family files after Dad died.”
“So did you,” Claire said.
Daniel looked at her.
I hated that I noticed.
I hated that doubt entered my mind again.
“Daniel didn’t do this,” I said.
Claire’s expression remained cautious.
“I’m not accusing him. I’m saying Ryan may try to.”
Margaret continued reviewing the files.
There were audio recordings too.
In one, Linda’s voice was unmistakable.
Once she signs the marriage license, she’ll stop fighting. Women like Emma care too much about appearances.
Ryan laughed.
She won’t want people knowing she failed after one day.
Then Patricia asked what would happen if I discovered the added pages.
Ryan answered without hesitation.
I’ll remind her that her brother knew about Claire. She’ll feel betrayed by everyone and come back to me.
Daniel turned away.
Ryan had known exactly where to cut me.
He had planned to isolate me from the one person who might protect me.
The recording continued.
Linda said, And if she still leaves?
Ryan replied, Then we use the photographs.
“What photographs?” I whispered.
Claire shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
Margaret searched the folders.
Nothing explained it.
My phone rang.
The caller ID showed my aunt Rebecca.
She was my father’s younger sister and the closest thing I had to a mother.
I answered.
Her voice was trembling.
“Emma, what is happening? Ryan called me.”
“What did he say?”
“He said you attacked him and ran away with another man.”
I looked at Daniel.
“What man?”
“He sent me photographs.”
My stomach dropped.
“Send them to me.”
A series of images arrived.
In the first, I stood outside a hotel beside a tall blond man.
In the second, he appeared to be touching my waist.
In the third, we entered the hotel together.
The images looked real.
But I had never been to that hotel.
The woman had my face.
My hair.
My wedding ring.
Daniel stared at the screen.
“These are fake.”
Aunt Rebecca heard him.
“Daniel is with you?”
“Yes.”
“Ryan said Daniel helped you hide the affair.”
I closed my eyes.
“Rebecca, I need you to trust me.”
“I want to. But Ryan is sending these to everyone.”
My social media notifications exploded.
Messages arrived from wedding guests, relatives, and friends.
Some asked if I was safe.
Others called me a liar.
One woman from Ryan’s family wrote that I had kicked my husband because he caught me cheating.
Linda posted the photograph of his swollen mouth.
Her caption read:
FOURTEEN HOURS AFTER MARRYING MY SON, SHE SHOWED HER TRUE FACE.
Within minutes, people began sharing it.
Ryan had predicted I would care about appearances.
He was right.
But he had mistaken caring for weakness.
I opened my own account and typed three sentences.
MY HUSBAND PRESENTED A FRAUDULENT PROPERTY DOCUMENT LESS THAN ONE DAY AFTER OUR WEDDING. I HAVE REPORTED IT. I WILL NOT DISCUSS AN ACTIVE INVESTIGATION ONLINE.
Margaret stopped me before I posted.
“Let him talk first.”
“Why?”
“Because every lie he publishes becomes evidence.”
I lowered the phone.
She was right.
Ryan called three times.
I ignored him.
Then a video appeared in our family group chat.
He sat in the living room of the house, speaking softly.
“I love my wife. I don’t know why she attacked me. I’m asking everyone to pray that Emma receives the help she needs.”
Linda sat behind him, wiping imaginary tears.
At the end of the video, Ryan looked into the camera.
“Emma, come home. Your family is waiting.”
I nearly threw the phone.
Then Margaret enlarged the background.
“Look.”
A cardboard box sat beside the staircase.
Written across it were the words STERLING HOME DESIGN—ARCHIVES.
My father’s missing company records were inside the house.
Ryan had exposed them in his own video.
Daniel smiled for the first time that day.
“He wants her to come home.”
Margaret stood.
“Then perhaps we should.”
I looked at her.
“You told me not to return.”
“Not alone.”
“What are you suggesting?”
“We arrange a supervised collection of your personal property. We notify law enforcement. We bring an independent witness.”
“And while they’re watching Ryan?”
Daniel pointed at the archive box.
“We find out what else he stole.”
An hour later, we stood at the end of my street.
A patrol officer waited behind us.
Margaret had obtained written permission from the trust administrator for me to enter the property.
Ryan opened the front door before we reached it.
His smile returned when he saw me.
“I knew you’d come back.”
I walked past him.
“I didn’t come back for you.”
Linda blocked the hallway.
