Chapter 4: The Blue Folder Hid a Truth That Could Destroy Two Families

“Mom, please tell me you’re still there.

Jacob’s voice sounded so broken that for a moment I heard the boy calling me from his room when he had nightmares.

But my son was no longer seven years old.

He was thirty-eight, a wife who had just confessed that her father had approached our money with ulterior motives and a responsibility he had tried to avoid for too long.

“Here I am, Jacob.

“I don’t know what to do.

I looked at the open blue folder on Harold’s desk. The document of the incomplete transfer was still under the lamp, along with Richard Bennett’s letter and several checks that my husband had carefully kept.

“For the first time in a long time, I want you to do something before you ask me what you should do.

“What?”

“Think about what you just discovered. Then ask yourself why your wife had to hide something like this from you.

Jacob did not answer.

I heard a door close on the other end of the call.

“Amanda’s crying,” he said finally. She says she didn’t know everything her dad was planning.

“And do you believe him?”

“I don’t know.

That answer worried me less than I expected. For the first time, my son admitted that he didn’t have a ready-made explanation to protect another person.

“Come tomorrow at ten o’clock,” I reminded him. Bring with you any documents Amanda has shown you about her family’s home or finances. Don’t sign anything tonight.

“Okay.

“And Jacob…

“Yes?”

“Don’t call me to ask me to fix this. Call me if you’re willing to face it with me.

I hung up before I could answer.

Then I looked at the documents again.

Harold had lent Richard Bennett $200,000 when his company was in crisis. Until then, it all seemed like an act of generosity between two men who had known each other for years.

However, the agreement included a clause that he did not understand.

If Richard couldn’t pay back the money within a certain timeframe, he had to file collateral backed by a property. The address that appeared on the document was that of our house.

But the final signature had never been completed.

Harold had clearly written that he did not authorize the transfer.

So why had Richard kept talking about the house as if it would one day belong to him?

I searched through the papers until I found a sheet dated six months after the loan was signed.

It was a letter from Harold addressed to a lawyer.

“I request confirmation that no claim on my residence can be made from the initial agreement, given that the guarantee was never formalized.”

Below was a short answer.

“The property continues to be registered in the names of Judith and Harold Emerson. There is no registered transfer”.

I let go of the air I had been holding.

The house was still ours.

My husband hadn’t allowed Richard to take it over.

But something was troubling me.

Why had he kept those documents without explaining anything to me?

And, above all, why had he warned that one day he would have to show them to me?

At nine o’clock in the morning, someone knocked on my door.

It wasn’t Jacob.

It was a man in a gray suit holding a courier envelope.

“Mrs. Judith Emerson?”

“Yes.

“I have a delivery that requires your signature.

I signed the receipt and closed the door.

The envelope did not bear the name of a company. Just my address and a handwritten note.

“So that he knows the whole story before making a decision.”

Inside I found a letter from Patricia.

I sat down before reading it.

«Judith:

I don’t expect you to forgive me. After what happened last night, I know that I have no right to ask you for confidence.

Richard told me years ago that Harold had agreed to a solution to the debt. He assured me that the property would serve only as a reference while he got a business loan. I never saw a transfer signed by Harold.

When Amanda started dating Jacob, Richard became overly interested in your son’s family. He told me that you had a paid house and that you lived alone. At first I thought she was just trying to get to know her future daughter-in-law’s family better.

Then he started asking questions about your will.

I told him that this was inappropriate.

She replied that if Amanda married Jacob, we would all end up benefiting from a family relationship that would give us security.

I didn’t understand what he meant until a few months ago.
