“I was looking for them because nobody is explaining to me what’s going on, and your mother is saying that you want to report her for preparing a surprise,” he commented.

I showed him the bank transaction and explained that someone had used an authorization that I had never signed.

My grandmother looked at the documents with a seriousness that contrasted with her jokes from a few minutes before.

“It’s one thing to prepare a surprise, and quite another to use someone’s money without asking permission,” he replied.

I felt an unexpected relief upon hearing that difference expressed so clearly.

My grandmother asked me if I remembered the necklace she had given me when I turned eighteen.

I nodded, surprised that he mentioned such an old episode.

“Your mother told me then that you had voluntarily lent it to Chloe, but later I discovered that you had been asking for it back for months,” she recalled.

I lowered my gaze because that story had always seemed too small to justify the pain it still caused.

My grandmother took my hand and explained that she had made the mistake of staying out of it to avoid problems between her daughters and granddaughters.

“I thought you were learning to share, when in reality you were learning that no one would listen to you if you said no,” she added.

His words made me cry again.

I didn’t need my grandmother to solve the financial problem.

I needed to know that someone within my family understood what I had been trying to explain for so many years.

Julia assured me that I had no obligation to give away my honeymoon and that I also didn’t need to compensate Chloe for a promise I had never made.

Then he returned to the room to ask our relatives to stop commenting on the conflict as if it were a dispute between jealous sisters.

Daniel and I stayed on the terrace for a few more minutes.

When I regained my composure, I decided that I would not continue arguing without having all the information.

I sent a message to my mother asking her to keep any documents related to the operation and to stop contacting the agency on my behalf.

I also informed him that the additional card had been blocked and that I was formally reviewing the charge.

His response came almost immediately.

She accused me of humiliating her in front of the whole family and said she never imagined that her own daughter would treat her like a criminal.

I did not respond to the accusation.

I simply told him that I needed to know who had prepared the authorization and who had ordered the payment.

My mother wrote that we would talk the next day because she didn’t intend to discuss private matters during my wedding.

That response would have been reasonable if she hadn’t publicly announced the supposed gift just a few hours earlier.

I decided to save the message and return to our guests.

The celebration continued with some modifications.

The DJ avoided any further impromptu performances, Lena personally oversaw the remaining activities, and Daniel and I were able to chat with friends we hadn’t seen for months.

My mother remained distant and Chloe left before the end accompanied by Tomas.

I didn’t try to stop them.

For the first time, I understood that I didn’t need to chase after those who were upset with me to ensure they continued to love me.

Around midnight, as the last guests began to say their goodbyes, Lena handed me a small file with the incidents recorded during the event.

It included the rejected request for the smoke cannons, the record of the installation carried out later, and the communications where my mother had presented herself as responsible for authorizing that surprise.

I thanked him for his professionalism and asked him to keep the original copies as well.

My coordinator hugged me and said she was deeply sorry that our family had complicated such an important night.

“The wedding had beautiful moments despite everything,” I replied, thinking of our rescheduled dance.

Daniel and I left the hall as the workers began to dismantle the last decorations.

We had booked a nearby room to rest before returning home and packing for our honeymoon.

During the journey we remained almost silent.

I watched the city lights and thought how absurd it was to have to protect our travel reservations from the people who were supposed to be happy for us.

Upon arriving at the hotel, I received a new notification from the agency.

The operations review department had responded to our request and asked us to confirm certain data related to the submitted authorization.

I opened the files from my computer and began to carefully review each page.
