“Are you asking because you’re worried about me or because Vanessa doesn’t want another argument?”

He shifted uncomfortably.

“She gets stressed when she travels.”

I watched his expression.

“Does being stressed make it acceptable to humiliate someone who helped you?”

He sighed.

“She shouldn’t have said those things.”

I waited for him to continue.

He didn’t.

“Then why didn’t you correct her?”

Michael looked toward Vanessa, who was speaking to the gate agent.

“I didn’t want a fight before our vacation.”

I felt something inside me settle into a sad kind of certainty.

“So you let her fight with me instead.”

He opened his mouth, then closed it.

I picked up my carry-on bag.

“Enjoy your flight, sweetheart.”

For a moment, I thought he might apologize properly.

Instead, he glanced toward his wife and followed her onto the airplane.

During boarding, Vanessa walked past me without acknowledgment.

She seemed completely confident that her expensive anniversary vacation remained exactly as she had imagined it.

I wondered whether she would ever understand how much had changed between us in less than an hour.

Once aboard, I settled into my seat and opened the novel I had packed for the journey.

Michael and Vanessa were seated a short distance away in the first-class cabin.

Vanessa immediately photographed her champagne glass, the wide leather seats, and the neatly arranged meal service.

I watched her smile at the camera with the carefree satisfaction of someone convinced that the world existed to reward her.

A few minutes later, her social media post appeared on my phone.

“Finally enjoying the luxury vacation we worked so hard to afford.”

Underneath, friends congratulated them on their success and admired the expensive seats.

Vanessa responded to several comments, describing how wonderful it felt to treat themselves.

I stared at the words for a moment before turning off my phone.

Michael noticed the screen as he walked past my seat after visiting the restroom.

His expression changed when he recognized his wife’s post.

“Mom, don’t let that upset you.”

I looked up.

“Do you believe what she wrote?”

He hesitated.

“It’s just social media.”

“No, Michael, it’s another way of telling people something that isn’t true.”

He rubbed his forehead.

“Can we please enjoy the vacation?”

I closed my book.

“That’s exactly what I intend to do.”

He seemed relieved, apparently mistaking my calmness for surrender.

For the rest of the flight, I watched clouds drift beneath the airplane and thought about how often I had confused helping my son with protecting him from uncomfortable consequences.

When Michael was young, I had worked extra hours to make sure he never felt the financial struggles I experienced growing up.
