He’s calling me about cameras and trespassing.
What is going on?”
“You and Eric entered my house yesterday.”
“We were looking around.”
“Without permission.”
“You gave me a key.”
“For Friday.”
“Oh my God, Mom.
Are you seriously keeping track of which day your daughter can walk into your house?”
“Yes.”
She made an astonished sound.
“That’s ridiculous.”
“I asked you to call first.”
“I was going to surprise you!”
“With ten people and three nights of houseguests?”
Silence.
Then she said, “So you were watching us?”
“My security system alerted me when the door opened.”
“That’s creepy.”
“It’s my home.”
“You were spying on your own daughter?”
“You came into my house without telling me.”
She changed direction.
“Fine.
I wanted to do something nice.
Apparently that’s a crime now.”
I heard Eric speaking in the background.
Claire covered the phone briefly.
Then she returned.
“Mom, you know what?
Forget it.
We were trying to make Christmas special for you.”
“How?”
“What?”
“How would arriving with suitcases and staying three nights without asking make Christmas special for me?”
She sounded genuinely irritated by the question.
“Because you’d have your family around.”
“For five years, I’ve asked to spend Christmas with my family.”
“And now we’re trying!”
“At my house.
On your terms.”
“Why does everything have to be a problem?”
I looked toward the photograph of Robert.
“Claire, if you want to visit, ask me.”
“You’re really going to make me ask permission?”
“Yes.”
There was a pause.
“Wow.”
“I love you.
That doesn’t mean the door stays open whenever you want.”
Her voice became cold.
“Well, I hope you’re happy in that enormous house all by yourself.”
She ended the call.
I sat very still.
Then I wrote down what she’d said.
Not for a report.
Not for Marcus.
For myself.
Because I knew that within a few days, I might begin wondering whether I’d misunderstood her.
I might remember only that she’d wanted to spend Christmas together.
I might convince myself that the details didn’t matter.
But they did.
I had asked for an invitation.
My daughter had demanded access.
Those were not the same thing.
That afternoon, I received a message from Daniel.
Claire says you don’t want anyone at the house for Christmas.
Is that true?
I stared at the words.
I had said no such thing.
I typed carefully.
I told Claire that no one may enter or stay here without asking me first.
That’s different from not wanting anyone.
His response came several minutes later.
We just want everyone together.
I replied:
So do I.
I’ve wanted that for five years.
Daniel n’a jamais répondu.
