Don’t make decisions just because you’re angry.”
“I’m not angry about the money.”
“What are you angry about?”
I turned toward the Christmas tree.
“That they seem to remember I’m their mother only when they need something.”
He let that answer stand.
We arranged to meet the next day.
Before hanging up, Marcus said something that stayed with me.
“Robert always believed you were stronger than you gave yourself credit for.”
“I wish he’d told me that more often.”
“He did.
You were usually too busy taking care of everybody to listen.”
After the call, I walked through the house checking the security system.
The previous owners had installed cameras at the front entrance, driveway, garage, and several common areas inside.
I activated the monitoring account, tested the alarm, and made sure the footage could be saved remotely.
Small red indicator lights blinked above the doorways.
I liked knowing the property was secure.
I had no idea how important those cameras would become.
That afternoon, I noticed an unfamiliar vehicle turning into the driveway.
A tall man in his fifties stepped out carrying a basket covered with a red-and-green towel.
He introduced himself as James Bell, my nearest neighbor.
His property was farther down the mountain road.
He was a police officer recovering from shoulder surgery and currently handling administrative duties while he finished physical therapy.
“My wife usually handles the welcome baskets,” he said, “but she’s visiting her sister this week, so you’re stuck with me.”
He lifted the towel.
Inside were homemade cookies, local coffee, a jar of honey, and a small card with emergency contact numbers.
I invited him inside.
He admired the view and asked how I was settling in.
I told him about the move, Robert, and the fact that this would be my first Christmas in the mountains.
“Family coming up?” he asked.
“Probably not.”
He must have heard something in my voice.
“That sounded complicated.”
I smiled.
“It is.”
He didn’t pry.
But when I mentioned that I was updating my locks and cameras, he offered a few sensible security suggestions.
As we talked, I found myself explaining more than I’d intended.
Five Christmases.
Five years of excuses.
A grandson who hadn’t understood why his grandmother wasn’t on the schedule.
James listened without interrupting.
Finally, he said, “People who benefit from your silence usually call boundaries cruelty.”
I looked at him.
“Where did you learn that?”
He smiled faintly.
“Twenty-seven years of police work.
And one very stubborn sister.”
We both laughed.
But after he left, I wrote the sentence on a piece of paper.
I put it beside Robert’s photograph on the mantel.
That evening, Claire called again.
Her voice was unusually cheerful.
“Mom, I’ve been thinking about your new house.”
“Have you?”
“Yeah.
« Je pourrais te l’apporter demain. »
