“Carol, when we get there, stay out of our way because this is our vacation!”

I felt a painful tightening in my throat.

“We paid for everything, and we don’t need you trying to control it!”

I looked directly at her.

“You paid for everything?”

She rolled her eyes dramatically.

“You didn’t pay for this trip!”

Several strangers turned toward me, their faces showing the uncomfortable curiosity people display when they witness a family argument in public.

I waited for Michael to explain the truth.

He had personally received every booking confirmation, every flight receipt, and every message documenting what I had purchased.

He knew that the suite Vanessa was bragging about existed because I had paid for it.

He knew that their first-class tickets had been purchased with my credit card.

He knew that the romantic dinner and private transportation were gifts from me.

Yet my son stared down at his phone as though the screen contained something more important than his mother’s dignity.

I felt a sudden, unfamiliar distance between us.

It wasn’t anger that frightened me most.

It was the realization that Michael had become comfortable allowing his wife to mistreat me as long as he didn’t have to confront her.

For years, I had excused his silence by telling myself that he was simply trying to keep peace in his marriage.

Now I wondered whether that peace had always been purchased at my expense.

Vanessa adjusted her sunglasses, apparently satisfied that she had embarrassed me enough.

“Just remember what I said when we get there.”

I looked at the woman wearing expensive clothes while enjoying a vacation I had purchased for her.

Then I looked at my son one final time.

He still wouldn’t meet my eyes.

“Understood,” I said quietly.

I picked up my handbag and moved several seats away from them.

Nobody followed me.

I sat near the window, staring at the airplanes moving slowly across the runway while my heart pounded beneath my sweater.
