« Tu as vraiment perdu la tête. »

The little beachfront hotel in Key West had confirmed my room, and the deposit had already been paid.

For years, I had dreamed of spending a few peaceful days near the ocean.

I wanted to walk beside the water, eat dinner without cooking it, and enjoy the kind of quiet I had forgotten existed.

I printed the confirmation and placed it beside my notebook.

Then I heard my phone ring.

Kevin.

I answered with a mixture of hope and dread.

“Mom, can we talk without Tiffany listening?”

“Of course.”

His voice sounded tired.

“Why didn’t you tell me you were planning to leave?”

“I tried telling you last month that I wanted some time away.”

He paused.

“I thought you meant after Christmas.”

“You never asked.”

He sighed.

“Tiffany says you promised to host everyone.”

I stared at the telephone.

“I never promised her anything.”

“She said you were excited about having the whole family.”

“Kevin, she walked into my kitchen this morning and announced her plans as though I worked for her.”

Another silence followed.

“She told me you’d already agreed,” he admitted.

I felt a cold disappointment settle over me.

“Did you ever think to ask me?”

“I thought she had handled it.”

“That seems to be what everyone thinks when the handling involves my time.”

Kevin sounded uncomfortable.

“Mom, please understand that Tiffany has already sent invitations.”

“Then she can explain the change of plans.”

He hesitated.

“There’s something you should see first.”

A message appeared on my phone.

Kevin had forwarded a digital Christmas invitation decorated with gold ornaments, white ribbons, and photographs of my living room.

I recognized my fireplace, my dining table, and the large window overlooking my garden.

Across the top, elegant letters announced a family Christmas celebration.

Beneath them were words that made me feel physically sick.

“Christmas At Kevin And Tiffany’s Home.”

I read them twice.

The address underneath was mine.

The home displayed in those photographs was mine.

Even the beautifully decorated tree belonged to me.

“Kevin, why does this invitation say your house?”

He did not answer immediately.

“Tiffany wanted it to sound welcoming.”

I stared at the screen.

“Welcoming to people who apparently believe you own my property?”

“It’s just wording, Mom.”

“No, Kevin, wording is calling me the cook when I’m the homeowner.”

I scrolled farther down.

A cheerful note promised a traditional homemade Christmas feast prepared with love.

My name was listed beside the words “holiday kitchen.”

I felt the same humiliation I had experienced at Tiffany’s parties, except this time it had been printed for an entire family to see.

“Did you know she put my name on this?”

“I saw the invitation.”

“And you said nothing?”

He lowered his voice.
