Officer Brooks explained the reporting process and the possibility of further action after review.
She also asked whether I needed medical evaluation.
My cheek was sore, but I declined emergency treatment.
I promised to seek care if the pain or swelling worsened.
By the time she finished speaking with me, nearly forty minutes had passed.
Our original flight was approaching its boarding window.
Mine was still active.
The others had no usable tickets on that reservation.
Dad was pacing near the counter.
Mom sat with her handbag on her knees.
Brooke was furiously texting someone.
Probably Tyler.
I checked my phone.
Six missed calls from Dad.
Four from Mom.
Eleven messages from Brooke.
The latest read:
YOU WILL PAY FOR THIS.
I took a screenshot.
Then another message appeared.
TYLER IS ALREADY ON HIS WAY.
I stared at it.
Apparently, she still expected me to solve the problem.
Officer Brooks finished her notes and handed me the incident reference information.
“Ms. Parker, is there anything else you’re concerned about?”
I looked at my family.
“Honestly? I’m concerned they’ll try to force me to pay for something else.”
She nodded.
“If anyone threatens you or prevents you from leaving, ask for help immediately.”
I thanked her.
Before she walked away, she said something quietly.
“You don’t have to negotiate with someone just because you’re related.”
Those words stayed with me.
Dad approached as soon as the officer left.
“Well? Are you satisfied now?”
I didn’t answer.
“Your mother is humiliated.”
I looked at Mom.
She was sitting less than twenty feet away, surrounded by the consequences of decisions she had helped create.
“She doesn’t have to be,” I said.
Dad shook his head.
“You’ve become cold.”
“No. I’ve become tired.”
“We raised you better than this.”
I looked at him for a long moment.
“Did you?”
He stared.
Then his phone rang.
He checked the screen.
“Tyler.”
Brooke hurried toward him.
“Give me that!”
Dad answered on speaker.
“Tyler, son, we’ve had a bit of a situation.”
A young man’s voice came through.
“Yeah, Brooke texted me. I’m almost there.”
Brooke grabbed the phone.
“Baby, Allison canceled our flights.”
Tyler was quiet.
Then he said, “Wait. Your sister canceled tickets she paid for?”
Brooke rolled her eyes.
“Don’t start.”
“I thought you said your dad was covering the trip.”
I went still.
Brooke froze.
Dad looked sharply at her.
“What?”
Tyler continued, completely unaware of what he’d revealed.
