Me había preguntado si estaba pidiendo demasiado.

Volví a preguntar.

The representative checked my identification, used the company’s authorized procedure to restore my access, and waited while I tested a new personal code.

The lock clicked open with a gentle sound I had heard thousands of times.

Jennifer touched my elbow and reminded me that we were there to document the condition of the property and collect what I needed.

I walked straight upstairs to Ivy’s nursery, passing Karen’s photographs along the staircase.

At the nursery door, I stopped when I saw a piece of paper taped to the wall.

It was a handwritten list of rooms, with Diane’s name beside the nursery suite and Karen’s beside the adjoining guest room.

The list had been made before I came home from the hospital, judging by the note about having everything ready for my discharge.

I recognized Brent’s handwriting in the final instruction to move my nursing chair if Diane wanted more room.

There, in a few hurried lines, was the future they had decided for me while I was occupied with giving birth.

I photographed the paper before I touched anything.

Then I folded Ivy’s small clothes into the diaper bag and packed the blankets I had washed before she arrived.

I couldn’t carry the armchair, but I sat in it for a moment and looked at the room I had imagined sharing with my daughter.

Jennifer found me there and said the buyer could be told that certain personal items would be removed before closing.

I nodded, grateful that she treated the chair as something meaningful rather than another item on an inventory.

My phone rang as I left the nursery, and this time I answered with Jennifer beside me when Brent’s name filled the screen.

“Someone told me you went back to the house,” he said.

“I went to collect Ivy’s things from the home I own.”

“You’re deliberately humiliating me in front of my family.”

I asked him whether he had written the room assignments taped to the nursery wall.

His silence told me he hadn’t expected me to find them.

“Mom was trying to help,” he finally said.

“Then why did you remove my code instead of asking me?”

He claimed I would have made another scene, then repeated that I should have driven directly to Molly’s.

I heard the meaning of those words clearly now: he had planned for me to stay away until I surrendered.

I ended the call when he began demanding to know what Jennifer was doing in his house.

At the front door, the security representative handed me the change record she had just retrieved.

It showed guest access remaining active for Diane and Karen while my personal credentials were scheduled for deletion.

I looked for the submission time, expecting to see the afternoon Brent left for Miami.
