Instead, I saw his administrator account beside a request created three days earlier, at 6:14 in the morning.
I had been in labor at 6:14 that morning, gripping Brent’s hand between contractions while he told me we were becoming a family.
“Nadie miente.”
Me aferré al papel.
“Tu marido sabe exactamente lo que pasó.”
Finalmente, Mark me miró directamente.
“Estoy intentando proteger mi matrimonio.”
Su respuesta me dejó atónito.
“¿Humillando a tu madre?”
No dijo nada.
Me giré hacia él.
He looked uncomfortable.
Amber moved between us.
“If you continue this nonsense, you’re going to ruin our entire vacation.”
I felt an unfamiliar calm settling over me.
“Amber, I came here hoping to spend time with my son.”
She folded her arms.
“Then perhaps you should have behaved like someone we actually wanted around.”
The words struck hard, but they no longer surprised me.
I looked at Mark.
“Do you agree with that?”
He glanced at his wife.
“Amber just wants some peace.”
“And you?”
He remained silent.
I stepped toward him, lowering my voice so the other guests would not hear.
“Mark, I want you to think carefully about what you’re doing.”
He looked exhausted.
“Mom, I can’t keep choosing between you and my wife.”
“I never asked you to choose between loving her and loving me.”
His eyes flickered.
“I am asking you to choose between cruelty and decency.”
Amber scoffed loudly.
“She’s manipulating you again.”
Mark straightened.
“Mom, you need to stop.”
Something in his tone reminded me of my late husband, although the resemblance made the moment even more painful.
I could almost hear the little boy Mark had once been asking why people sometimes behaved cruelly.
Back then, I had told him that being disappointed never gave us permission to hurt someone else.
Apparently, he had forgotten.
“Before I say anything more, I want to give you one opportunity to withdraw the complaint,” I told him.
Amber looked outraged.
“Absolutely not.”
I kept my eyes on Mark.
“I am asking my son.”
He stared at the form lying on the reception counter.
For several seconds, I could see uncertainty struggling across his face.
Then Amber touched his arm.
“Don’t let her control you.”
The uncertainty disappeared.
“No, Mom,” he said firmly.
“We’re not withdrawing anything.”
I nodded slowly.
Something inside me finally stopped fighting for the version of my son that existed only in my memories.
“Then I understand.”
Amber smiled as though she had won.
“You should have understood that hours ago.”
I turned toward Sarah.
“Please ask the general manager to come here with the incident report and the ownership records.”
Sarah’s expression changed immediately.
“Yes, ma’am.”
Amber gave a mocking laugh.
“Ownership records?”
She looked toward Mark.
“Your mother thinks she’s going to run a legal investigation over a hotel room.”
Mark shook his head.
“Mom, you’re embarrassing yourself.”
I said nothing.
For years, I had avoided mentioning my business because I believed modesty protected my family from the corrupting influence of money.
But I was beginning to understand that hiding my accomplishments had not taught Mark humility.
It had merely allowed him to believe that people without visible wealth deserved less respect.
A few minutes later, Sarah received a quiet telephone call.
She listened, glanced toward me, and confirmed that the general manager was on his way.
Meanwhile, Amber began speaking loudly enough for nearby guests to hear.
