The front door slammed against the wall, and for one terrible second, nobody moved.

Ethan stood in the doorway with his work bag hanging from one hand, his eyes fixed on the blood dripping from my palm.

A drop struck the white marble floor.

Then another.

His gaze traveled from my injured hand to the shattered ceramic bowl scattered across the kitchen, then to the raw rack of lamb on the cutting board.

Finally, he looked at his mother.

“Mom,” he said, his voice so quiet that Patricia actually took a step backward. “Tell me what happened.”

Patricia’s expression changed instantly.

The smug smile disappeared.

Her shoulders slumped, her mouth trembled, and she pressed one hand against her chest as if she were the victim of some terrible misunderstanding.

“Oh, Ethan, thank God you’re home!” she cried. “Your wife has completely lost control. I was only trying to prepare dinner for Nicole, and she started screaming at me.”

I stared at her.

For a moment, I couldn’t even find the words to respond.

This woman had thrown a bowl at my face.

She had watched me bleed.

And now she was standing in my kitchen, inventing a story before the blood on the floor had even dried.

Nicole slowly slipped her phone into her pocket.

“It’s true, Ethan,” she said, wearing the innocent expression she had perfected over the past several months. “Mom was just asking her to cook dinner. She refused, started being disrespectful, and then everything got out of hand.”

Ethan didn’t answer either of them.

He walked straight toward me.

“Let me see your hand.”

“Ethan, I’m fine.”

“No, you’re bleeding.”

He gently removed the dish towel I had wrapped around my palm.

The fabric had already turned dark red.

His jaw tightened when he saw the deep cut across my skin.

“Who did this?”

Patricia made an exasperated sound.

“Oh, for heaven’s sake, Ethan! She broke the bowl herself. I was trying to take it away from her because she was behaving irrationally.”

I watched my husband carefully.

For the past three years, I had wondered what it would take for him to finally see his mother for who she really was.

I had wondered how many insults I would have to endure before he stopped telling me to be patient.

I had wondered how many times Patricia could humiliate me before Ethan understood that keeping the peace was not the same thing as protecting his marriage.

Now, standing in front of him with blood running down my wrist, I realized I was about to get my answer.

Ethan lifted his head.

“Mom, I asked who did this.”

Patricia’s eyes widened.

“Don’t you dare speak to me like that.”

“Then answer the question.”

“She threw the bowl!”

“That’s a lie,” I whispered.

Patricia spun toward me.

“Shut your mouth!”

Ethan stepped between us so quickly that Patricia stopped mid-sentence.

“Don’t you ever speak to my wife like that again.”

Silence fell over the kitchen.

Nicole looked up from her phone.

Patricia stared at her son as though he had just slapped her.

“Excuse me?”

“You heard me.”

“After everything I’ve done for you?”

Ethan let out a short, disbelieving laugh.

“Everything you’ve done for me? Mom, my wife is standing here bleeding, and you’re worried about whether I have spoken politely enough to you?”

“She disrespected me!”

“She told you not to cook meat that had been left in a hot car for hours!”

Nicole immediately stood up.

“That’s not fair! I’ve been craving lamb for weeks!”

Ethan turned toward her.

“Nicole, sit down.”

Her mouth fell open.

“I’m pregnant!”

“And that gives you the right to demand that someone prepare spoiled food for you?”

“It’s not spoiled!”

“Did you see how long it sat in the car?”

Nicole hesitated.

Patricia answered for her.

“It was perfectly fine. You’re making a mountain out of nothing.”

Ethan looked at the cutting board, then at the meat.

“I don’t know whether this lamb is safe, and neither do you. But I know my wife shouldn’t have to risk anyone’s health to satisfy your demands.”

He took his phone from his pocket and looked at the security camera mounted in the corner of the kitchen.

Then he looked back at his mother.

“I’m going to ask you one more time. What happened?”

Patricia’s face flushed.

“I will not stand here and be interrogated in my own son’s house!”

Ethan’s expression became frighteningly calm.

“Your son’s house?”

He glanced at me.

Then he looked at Patricia again.

“That’s interesting, because the last time I checked, my wife helped pay for this house. She helped save my company. She has spent three years making sacrifices for this family while you’ve treated her like a servant.”

Patricia’s lips parted.

Ethan continued.

“And now you’ve thrown a bowl at her.”

For the first time, I saw something resembling fear in my mother-in-law’s eyes.

But she wasn’t finished.

People like Patricia rarely surrendered when they realized they had gone too far.

They simply searched for a new weapon.

She pointed a trembling finger at me.

“Ethan, if you take her side over your own mother, you’ll regret it for the rest of your life.”

He looked at her for several seconds.

Then he said the words that changed everything.

“Both of you, get out of my house right now!”

Nicole gasped.

Patricia went completely still.

And I stood beside the kitchen counter, unable to believe that my husband had finally said what I had been too exhausted to ask him to say.

But Patricia was about to discover something far worse than being thrown out of our home.

She was about to discover that the woman she had spent months trying to destroy had been keeping records of everything.

And those records were going to expose a secret that could cost her far more than a place to live.

“YOU CANNOT BE SERIOUS!”

Patricia’s scream echoed through the house.
