Suddenly, I wondered how often Vanessa had told me our daughter was difficult when Lily had merely been hungry.

I left work earlier than usual.

I told my supervisor there was something I needed to handle at home.

During the drive, I tried to convince myself I was overreacting.

Maybe Lily had developed unusual eating habits.

Maybe Vanessa was following advice I’d forgotten discussing.

Maybe there was a perfectly ordinary explanation for everything.

But every possibility collapsed when I remembered Lily asking whether she had been good at dinner.

When I pulled into our driveway, the house looked peaceful.

Vanessa’s car was parked beside the garage, and the living room curtains were open.

I expected to find the children watching cartoons while my wife prepared dinner.

Instead, I found Noah standing alone near the kitchen doorway.

His face was pale.

His hands were trembling.

The moment he saw me, he hurried forward.

“Dad.”

I crouched to his level.

“What’s wrong?”

He glanced over his shoulder.

“Can I tell you something?”

“Of course.”

He leaned closer.

“Promise you won’t get mad.”

My heart began beating faster.

“You’re not in trouble, buddy.”

His eyes filled with tears.

“Promise you won’t tell Mom I said it.”

I froze.

I’d never heard my son sound so frightened of his own mother.

“Noah, whatever’s happening, you can tell me.”

He wiped his face with his sleeve.

“Dad, she doesn’t let Lily eat.”

For a second, I couldn’t process the words.

“What do you mean?”

He swallowed.

“Sometimes Lily asks because she’s hungry, and Mom says she has to wait.”

“Wait until when?”

Noah’s lips trembled.

“Until she learns.”

“Who learns what?”

Before he could answer, Vanessa appeared behind him.

“That’s enough, Noah.”

My son flinched so violently that I stood up.

Vanessa looked at me, then at Noah.

“He’s making things up because he doesn’t want to follow the rules.”

“Noah says Lily isn’t being allowed to eat.”

“That’s ridiculous.”

Her voice became sharper.

“Our refrigerator is full, and I cook for these children every day.”

“Then why would he tell me this?”

“Because he’s upset about being disciplined.”

Noah shook his head.
