Elle se détourna.

Je voulais me sentir satisfait.

I wanted to believe that Daniel’s carefully constructed story had finally collapsed beneath the weight of its own lies.

But the folder in my hands was too important for satisfaction.

It contained a question about my children’s identity.

And I needed an answer.

I turned to Rachel.

“Do you know whether anyone ever followed up on this report?””

She shook her head.

“Not that I know of.””

“Did you ever tell Daniel you had seen him at the hospital?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“The same evening.””

“What did he say?””

Rachel looked at her brother.

“He told me that he had no intention of getting involved in someone else’s family.””

I looked at Daniel.

“Someone else’s family?””

He swallowed.

“I didn’t know they were yours.””

“That’s not the point.””

“I know.””

“Do you?””

He looked at me.

For the first time since I had entered the house, he seemed unable to hide behind his usual confidence.

“I thought if I stayed away, I wouldn’t have to face what my father might have done. I didn’t know what the truth was, and I didn’t want to open something I couldn’t close.””

I shook my head.

“So you closed your eyes and hoped the problem would disappear.””

He nodded faintly.

“Yes.””

“And in the meantime, I became their mother.””

He looked at the children.

“Yes.””

I felt tears burn behind my eyes.

“I spent years thinking I would never have a family. I spent years believing I had failed at the one thing I wanted most. Then I met two children who needed someone to love them, and they gave me a reason to hope again.””

My voice broke.

“I didn’t need them to share my blood. I didn’t need them to resemble me. I needed them to be safe, loved, and wanted.””

Daniel wiped his face.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t. Because if you did, you would understand why this report doesn’t give you the right to walk into their lives and demand answers.””

He looked down.

I held the folder against my chest.

“I will speak to their adoption agency. I will speak to the appropriate professionals. If testing is necessary, we will handle it properly, with the children’s well-being first.””

Daniel nodded.

“I understand.””

“You will not contact them privately. You will not tell them anything you cannot prove. And you will not use this information to make another public spectacle of my life.””

He looked at Oliver and Sophie.

“I would never hurt them.””

I felt my expression harden.

“You said the same thing about me.””

He flinched.

For a moment, I thought he might argue.

Instead, he whispered, “I’m sorry.””

It was the first apology he had offered that afternoon without adding an excuse.

But I wasn’t ready to accept it.

Perhaps I never would be.

Sophie tugged at my hand.

“Mummy, can we go home now?””

I looked down at her.

“Yes, sweetheart.””

Oliver glanced at the folder.

“Will we know if he’s related to us?””

I knelt between them.

“We’ll find out the truth when we have the right information.””

“Will anything change?””

The question broke my heart.

I took both their hands.

« Claire. »

Je me suis arrêté sans tourner.

« J’ai besoin de savoir s’ils sont à moi. »

J’ai regardé par-dessus mon épaule.

« Non.
