FINANCIAL OVERSEER: AURELIUS MORETTI

SECURITY DIRECTOR: CASSIUS VANCE

OCTOBER 14, 1893

“Aurelius Moretti,” Emma whispered, looking up at Vincent with searching eyes.

“Your great-grandfather.”

Vincent stared at the bronze plaque, his stern features tightening.

“My family never spoke of this.

The official archives said Aurelius died of pneumonia during the construction of the river bridges.”

“He didn’t die of illness,” Emma said, reading the fine script below the names.

“Sacrificed in defense of the Primary Seal against the encroaching syndicate.’

Vincent… our families didn’t just build this city together.

They died together protecting it from the very people hunting us now.”

Before Vincent could reply, the lights along the corridor flickered violently.

A deep, seismic tremor shook the stone floor beneath their boots.

Farther down the tunnel, the faint sound of rushing, pressurized water began to echo—a deep, predatory roar that rattled their teeth.

“The pressure valves,” Marcus warned, drawing his sidearm.

“Someone just manually opened the lake sluice gates above.”

“Clara Vance,” Vincent said, his jaw tightening into iron.

“She couldn’t crack this door from the outside, so she’s flooding the lower chambers to flush us toward the Primary Gate.”

“How much time do we have?”

Emma asked.

“Ten minutes before the lower arterial tunnels are completely submerged,” Vincent replied, checking his ammunition reserves.

“We don’t retreat.

We go forward.

The Primary Gate is at the terminus of this tunnel.

If we can reach the control core before Clara’s strike team breaches from the downtown shaft, we can lock down the entire municipal grid.”

“And if we can’t?”

Emma asked.

Kapitel 88 – Die Schattenvorhut

They sprinted down the sloping brick tunnel as icy water began to pour from overflow grates along the floor, swirling around their boots.

The air grew progressively colder, damp with the primeval chill of Lake Michigan’s deepest depths.

Ahead, the corridor expanded into a colossal underground chamber—an awe-inspiring cavern carved out of solid limestone bedrock, dominated by towering iron turbines that hummed with immense electrical power.

Spanning the cavern was an elevated steel bridge leading toward a monolithic black vault door—the Primary Gate.

Standing on the bridge, waiting for them beneath the glare of industrial floodlights, was a dozen heavily armed operators.

In the center stood Clara Vance, dressed in a sleek charcoal trench coat, holding a detonator pad.

Beside her stood a towering man wearing the polished silver mask of the Consortium Tribunal.

“Welcome home, Emma,” Clara Vance called out, her voice amplified across the roaring cavern by the facility’s intercom system.

“You are the final key to this century of silence.”

Vincent shoved Emma behind an iron stanchion as sniper fire zipped through the mist.

“Marcus, take the left catwalk!

Suppress the heavy gunner!”

Marcus nodded, leading the surviving Moretti guards through the lower catwalks, opening disciplined fire to flank the enemy position.

Gunfire erupted in a chaotic storm of muzzle flashes, empty shells raining down into the surging torrent of water below.

Vincent leaned out from the stanchion, firing with pinpoint lethal precision.

Two Consortium operators fell from the bridge, their bodies plummeting into the churning turbine blades beneath the platform.

The masked figure raised his hand.

“Hold your fire!”

The Consortium operators immediately ceased firing, keeping their carbines trained on Vincent’s position.

The masked man stepped forward to the railing, looking down at Vincent and Emma.

“Vincent Moretti.

You have fought valiantly.

You have defended your city with the ferocity of your ancestor.

But look around you.

The water is rising.

In five minutes, the downtown relief valves will rupture, drowning three million people in their sleep.”

“Not while I breathe,” Vincent replied, stepping out into the open, his sidearm leveled directly at the masked man’s visor.

“Then let Emma step forward,” Clara Vance demanded, her eyes wild with feverish ambition.

“She places her palm upon the bio-metric core of the Gate, releases the override, and we spare the city.

The Consortium takes control of the network.

Chicago lives.

Refuse… and you will drown alongside your empire.”

Emma looked at Vincent.

The water was already up to their knees, surging rapidly through the drainage channels.

“Vincent,” Emma whispered softly, stepping up beside him.

“I have to do it.”

“No,” Vincent hissed, gripping her wrist tightly.

“The moment that gate opens, they won’t need you anymore.

They will execute us both.”

“If I don’t, millions will die,” Emma said, her gaze steady, fearless, and brimming with resolve.

“My grandfather didn’t give me this watch to hide from monsters, Vincent.

He gave it to me so I would protect the people who couldn’t protect themselves.”

Vincent looked into her eyes, seeing not the timid waitress who had once dropped a tray in fear, but a queen ready to claim her sovereign duty.
